This is a full-time maximum term position to December 2022 located at our Perth Head Office.

About the Role:

Western Power recognises the need to further develop its capabilities as a Distribution System Operator (DSO) to manage the distribution network in a much more granular and active fashion than has been done in the past. It is essential to our overall distributed energy management strategy, and ability to host more renewable energy while managing the technical challenges that brings. One of the ways Western Power is testing and building DSO capability is through its participation in the DER Orchestration Pilot “Project Symphony” – one of the WA State Government’s DER Roadmap initiatives.

This position is accountable for providing advice, guidance and technical /strategic leadership and engineering expertise in identifying, prioritising and delivering Project Symphony objectives. The work will be focused on building and testing engineering methodologies to plan and operate a high DER network environment, integrating with DER aggregators and market constructs. This will require a focused response using network planning principles in an operational and market environment and knowledge of design and operations to maximise the benefits to Western Power and its customers through this project.

This position will include guiding how the engineering solutions could be scaled and implemented into a future Western Power/DSO planning and operational process. It will work with cross business unit teams, working groups, cross organisational teams and other key stakeholders to help deliver to the Symphony objectives, and gain a greater understanding of the risks and opportunities emerging technologies and related themes pose to the network and develop strategic responses for Western Power.

About you:

The successful applicant will be experienced and competent in the following:

  • An engineering professional with broad and or deep range of knowledge and expertise gained through comprehensive energy industry experience i.e. 10+ years in senior engineering or program/project roles
  • Highly developed written, verbal and presentation communications skills, and extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Project management and Agile project delivery
  • Deep range of technical expertise gained through delivering complex strategic initiatives
  • Proven risk management capability in a commercial business setting
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of network utility regulation and the requirements this places on the justification and development of projects
  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree
  • Strong technical leadership experience including the technical development of others
  • Strong influencing, communication and interpersonal skills including reporting at senior management, Executive and Board level
  • Possess a thorough understanding of global drivers for emerging technologies and their application in the energy sector and acts as a “thought leader” in field of expertise

At Western Power, our people are our strength.  We offer a collaborative, flexible and safe work environment within a large organisation and are committed to equal opportunity employment.  You will receive opportunities for development and training, use your skills and develop new ones to meet the challenges of an organisation delivering an essential service to the people of Western Australia.
