Payroll Specialist

We're looking for an experienced Payroll Specialist to join our team on a fixed-term basis and make a meaningful impact across our payroll function. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your deep payroll expertise to a role that combines technical excellence, governance, and people-focused support.
Working closely with the Payroll Team Leader, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring payroll processes are accurate, compliant, and delivered to the highest standard, while driving continuous improvement through system enhancements, process optimisation, and best-practice payroll governance.
You'll also provide expert advice on complex payroll matters, support and mentor payroll team members through training and knowledge sharing and deliver a valued advisory service to employees and leaders alike. Your Role in Action
- Champion payroll excellence by ensuring compliance, identifying and mitigating risks, and driving continuous improvements across payroll processes, systems, and controls.
- Lead the implementation and testing of payroll system upgrades, legislative changes, enterprise agreement updates, and policy enhancements, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
- Provide trusted expert advice on complex payroll matters, delivering a responsive and high-quality advisory service to employees, leaders, and key stakeholders.
- Process fortnightly and off-cycle payruns accurately and in a timely manner.
- Partner closely with HR and IT teams to interpret industrial agreements, policies, and payroll requirements, ensuring consistent and compliant outcomes.
- Monitor payroll integrity through audits, reconciliations, and detailed reviews of payroll calculations, taxation, superannuation, salary packaging, and pay-related transactions.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance payroll procedures and documentation, while actively training and educating team members to build capability and knowledge.
- Build strong collaborative relationships across the business and act as a role model for exceptional customer service, supporting a positive employee experience.
- Support the Payroll Team Leader by coordinating team activities when required, fostering a positive team culture, and contributing to a safe, high-performing work environment.
What Makes You a Great Fit
- Proven experience in a senior payroll role within a large and complex organisation, with expertise across awards and enterprise agreements, rostering, shift work, overtime, allowances, reimbursements, and salary packaging.
- Strong SAP payroll experience, with the ability to confidently manage system updates, testing, and process enhancements.
- Well-developed knowledge of payroll legislation, taxation, superannuation, and employment frameworks, with the ability to interpret policies and industrial instruments accurately.
- Demonstrated ability to identify compliance risks, solve complex payroll issues, and drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and governance.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills, with a customer-focused approach and a commitment to delivering trusted advice and support.
- Relevant qualifications and/or significant experience in payroll, compliance, auditing, or a related discipline, coupled with a collaborative mindset, sound judgement, and high attention to detail.
